Apartment Living

Apartments and duplexes allow individuals to live as independently as possible, while still receiving support from staff when needed. Individuals often work, attend vocational programs, day programs or pursue other opportunities in the community. Each individual is responsible for their own apartment, cooking meals and managing their finances.

1.    Multi-Unit Apartment Building or Duplex: Unlike group living settings, which often involve larger communal spaces, Apartment Living typically takes place in a multi-unit apartment building or duplex where each individual has their own apartment. This offers more private and individualized living environment.

2.    Staff Assistance and Guidance: While individuals do not require 24-hour supervision, staff members are available to provide assistance and guidance as needed. This support may include help with tasks such as budgeting, meal planning, accessing community resources, and addressing any challenges related to independent living.

3.    Individualized Support Plans: Each individual typically has an individualized support plan that is tailored to their specific needs and goals. This plan outlines the level of assistance required and focuses on areas where individuals may benefit from support to enhance their independence.

4.    Community Integration: Similar to other community-based living arrangements, Apartment Living emphasizes community integration. Individuals are encouraged to participate in social activities, engage with neighbors, work if they choose and become active members of the broader community.

5.    Life Skills Development: Support staff may provide opportunities for individuals to develop and enhance life skills that contribute to increased independence. This could include training in areas such as cooking, cleaning, time management, and communication.

6.    Choice and Autonomy: Individuals are empowered to make choices regarding their daily routines, activities, and lifestyle preferences. This emphasis on choice and autonomy helps individuals maintain a sense of control over their living environment and personal decisions.
