Our Story

In 1971, members of the Alamance County community collaborated with program teams from various areas to establish Ralph Scott Group Homes, marking the inception of North Carolina's first community-based group home with a not-for-profit board. This endeavor emerged from a pioneering state program that allocated four grants, aiming to highlight an alternative approach to institutional care for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The inaugural home, located in Elon, NC, opened its doors to ten men transitioning from Murdoch Center. By 1973, a parallel group home for women was also established. In 1991, Ralph Scott Group Homes underwent a transformation, evolving into Ralph Scott Lifeservices, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The organization's name pays tribute to Senator Ralph H. Scott, a native of Haw River, North Carolina, known for his advocacy for children with developmental disabilities and his pivotal role in securing crucial funding for special education.
