Dream big and Reach for the Stars

A small idea grew into a bold, vision—one rooted in the belief that everyone deserves a place to engage, connect, and actively participate. Through collaboration, insight, and a shared commitment to inclusion, the Outdoor Enhancement & Accessibility Project came to life.

At Ralph Scott Lifeservices, we believe everyone deserves the chance to live an active, meaningful life in an enriching and supportive community. The StarPoint Day Program at Ralph Scott Lifeservices offers a supportive and enriching environment for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Designed to promote independence, personal growth, and community inclusion, our day program provides structured daily activities tailored to meet individual interests and needs.

The Vision

The vision of the Reach for the Stars Campaign is to inspire community partnership and collaboration to support the StarPoint Outdoor Enhancement & Accessibility Project. This transformative initiative aims to create fully inclusive, accessible outdoor spaces at the StarPoint Day Program - where individuals of all abilities can experience the joy and freedom of being outdoors. Designed with input and feedback from our stakeholders, the thoughtfully planned environment will provide opportunities for physical activity, relaxation, recreation, and meaningful connection. By removing barriers, the space will foster positive peer interactions and support improved overall health and well-being for every participant.

Exceeding Expectations

At the StarPoint Day Program, more than 60 individuals from our group homes and the wider community take part in daily enrichment and social activities. Of those participants, over 34% have mobility challenges that require a wheelchair or other assistive equipment—making accessibility essential to their everyday experiences.

While the current outdoor areas provide ample yard space and opportunities for movement for individuals who are able to walk unassisted and without mobility challenges, they were not originally designed with full accessibility in mind.

The StarPoint Outdoor Enhancement & Accessibility Project will introduce wide, stable pathways that support movement and activity, along with recreation areas designed to encourage exploration and participation. Wheelchair-accessible and adaptive swings, as well as raised ADA garden beds will offer inclusive opportunities for engagement with nature in ways that are comfortable and achievable for all abilities.

Access to nature, opportunities for social connection and physical activity in sensory-friendly environments all play a vital role in supporting psychological and emotional well-being—helping every individual at StarPoint thrive. At Ralph Scott Lifeservices, we’re not just meeting a need - we’re exceeding expectations.

Our Impact

When Jack* arrived at Ralph Scott Lifeservices, he had been experiencing homelessness for years. Without access to stable housing, healthcare, or the support he needed to thrive, his health had declined to the point that he could no longer walk on his own. Through community resources and coordinated outreach efforts, he was connected to Ralph Scott Lifeservices—opening the door to the care, stability and a home he so urgently needed.

During his first years with us, Jack relied on a wheelchair. But with steady therapy, regular exercise, and the encouragement of dedicated staff, he began to rebuild his strength—step by step. Today, Jack moves forward with determination, walking proudly with the aid of a walker.

For Jack, the planned outdoor enhancements mean more than new spaces—they represent opportunity and increased independence. The accessible walking path will provide a safe, supportive space for him to continue strengthening his mobility, improving balance, and building confidence with each step. The raised garden beds will allow him to participate in meaningful, hands-on activities without physical strain or barriers, supporting his continued rehabilitation while also fostering a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

Funding Progress & Partnerships

A transformative lead gift of $500,000 has launched the campaign and set this vision into motion. Groundbreaking for the StarPoint Outdoor Enhancement & Accessibility Project is underway, with critical upgrades to accessibility, parking, and the main entrance—laying the foundation for a more welcoming, inclusive experience for all who visit. Work to reimagine the front and back outdoor spaces will follow in Fall 2026.

This progress has been made possible through the leadership and investment of key partners and early supporters—including the City of Burlington, Impact Alamance, and New Leaf Society—whose commitment has advanced the project from concept to construction.
